I saw Steve Buscemi getting his hair combed inside the theater while the crew were setting up. And also saw Elvis Costello doing a few takes on his own along with extras around him. Might I add, Costello looked friggin creepy. Just wait till u see... The guy looks insane. I didn't get a great look at him from where i stood because the camera operator was in my line of sight, but i looked to the side and found one of the monitors that was hooked up to the camera and watched him do his take. He was great. He had this real creepy/insane/maniacal look to him. But it kinda changed from take to take. ( Tue Dec 6 2005 )

The Associated Press reports-
Elvis Costello will take the stage in Copenhagen this weekend ( Oct. 8-9 '05) for the premiere of his opera The Secret Arias, which is based on Danish fairy tale writer Hans Christian Andersen’s impossible romance with a Swedish soprano.
The opera tells of a three-way drama between Andersen, Jenny Lind – dubbed the Swedish Nightingale – and her American impresario, Phineas Taylor Barnum, who brought Lind to New York for her first American concert tour in 1850.
Costello will play both Andersen and Barnum, while Swedish soprano Gisela Stille will sing Lind’s part.
Costello said his work was a traditional opera.
“It would be a surprise if people thought I would be playing a lot of rock ’n’ roll,” he said at a news conference in Copenhagen.
“It is not inconceivable” to be a rock singer and write an opera, said Costello, who has also recorded with Swedish soprano Anne Sofie Von Otter and the Brodsky Quartet.
The opera will be performed at Copenhagen’s new opera house on Saturday and Sunday. Next season, it will be on the opera house’s repertoire with other performers.
Contacted nearly three years ago by the Danish Royal Theater ahead of the 2005 bicentennial of Andersen’s birth, Costello wrote “the songs (which) will tell a story that I have imagined existing between the lines of Andersen’s biography and some of his most famous tales,” he told reporters.
“I didn’t want it to sound like a pastiche of Andersen,” Costello said. The opera eventually will go on an international tour and will be released on compact disc and DVD.
Four musicians will accompany Costello and Stille at the opera’s main stage, which seats up to 1,700 people.
By picking Costello, “we wanted to show that we don’t want boxes at the opera. We thought the meeting between the two worlds would be interesting,” the opera’s artistic director, Kasper Holten, said.
This year, Danes mark the bicentennial of Andersen’s birth, who is renowned for his children’s stories, including the classics The Little Match Girl, The Ugly Duckling and The Red Shoes. Andersen died in 1875.
It is believed that Andersen wrote his tale The Nightingale with Lind – who lived from 1820-1887 – in mind.
Last Febuary Elvis commented -
"Of course the minute opera is mentioned it's like a big, fat woman with a Viking helmet. Everyone sees that image and thinks that it has to sound like Puccini.
"What I am actually doing is telling a story about Andersen. I didn't want to set one of the tales because that has been done.
"I'm right in the process of writing it - it's about Andersen who was this weird misfit kind of guy who came from a very poor background and rose to prominence because he basically invented children's stories. Andersen was a very conflicted person in his own sexuality. He kept falling in love with the wrong people.
"But it is not going to be written for an orchestra and I'm singing two of the roles in the initial production so it won't be like formal opera."
The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports -

Jazz diva Diana Krall and her husband, rocker Elvis Costello, watched raptly as Oscar Peterson performed at his birthday party yesterday.
Costello had fashioned new lyrics to When Summer Comes, a waltz the seven-time Grammy winner wrote a couple of years ago.
Before she played, Krall explained how a performance she saw as a young woman by Peterson, accompanying Ella Fitzgerald, transformed her future.
"Life was never the same from that day on," said Krall who immediately went out and bought the Night Train LP, to which she still listens. "You are always with me and my band," she said.
Later, a nonplused Krall explained her nerves to reporters: "I'm at a complete loss. This is a really big deal for me. He's my hero."
Costello's lyrics to When Summer Comes speak of the losses of winter but also of the new blooms that spring carries, "in every shade of hope."
He told The News that the remarks Peterson made about the deaths of so many jazz giants in a telephone conversation they had prompted the moody piece.
"That guided me really," said the singer and songwriter.
Here are the lyrics as published in Toronto Star:
WHEN SUMMER COMES
(music by Oscar Peterson
new lyrics by Elvis Costello
played and sung by Diana Krall)
The land was white
While the winter moon was absent from the night
And the blackness only pierced by far off stars
But as every day still succeeds the darkest moments we have known
When seasons turn
Springtime colours will return
And as the first pale flowers of the lengthening hours
Seem to brighten the twilight and that melancholy cloak
Then a fresh perfume just seems to burst from each bloom
Until the green shoots through each day
As it arrives in every shade of hope
When summer comes
There will be a dream of peace
And a breath that I've held so long that I can barely release
Then perhaps I may even find a room somewhere
Just a place I can still speak to you

Elvis Costello has followed his musical curiosity for more than 25 years. He may be best known for his participation in London’s mid-’70s punk scene, but he explored many avenues, including a jazz album that topped the Billboard charts for five weeks. He has won many awards including a Grammy for his collaboration with Burt Bacharach. Elvis Costello and the Attractions were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2003. Costello offers both talk and song in an evening moderated by Bill Flanagan.
Bill Flanagan is senior vice president and editorial director of MTV Networks International and the MTV Networks Music Group. He is also a commentator on CBS News Sunday Morning and author of the novel A & R.
