(extract)

I saw Steve Buscemi getting his hair combed inside the theater while the crew were setting up. And also saw Elvis Costello doing a few takes on his own along with extras around him. Might I add, Costello looked friggin creepy. Just wait till u see... The guy looks insane. I didn't get a great look at him from where i stood because the camera operator was in my line of sight, but i looked to the side and found one of the monitors that was hooked up to the camera and watched him do his take. He was great. He had this real creepy/insane/maniacal look to him. But it kinda changed from take to take. ( Tue Dec 6 2005 )

Costello to perform opera about Hans Christian Andersen

The Associated Press reports-

Elvis Costello will take the stage in Copenhagen this weekend ( Oct. 8-9 '05) for the premiere of his opera The Secret Arias, which is based on Danish fairy tale writer Hans Christian Andersen’s impossible romance with a Swedish soprano.

The opera tells of a three-way drama between Andersen, Jenny Lind – dubbed the Swedish Nightingale – and her American impresario, Phineas Taylor Barnum, who brought Lind to New York for her first American concert tour in 1850.

Costello will play both Andersen and Barnum, while Swedish soprano Gisela Stille will sing Lind’s part.

Costello said his work was a traditional opera.

“It would be a surprise if people thought I would be playing a lot of rock ’n’ roll,” he said at a news conference in Copenhagen.

“It is not inconceivable” to be a rock singer and write an opera, said Costello, who has also recorded with Swedish soprano Anne Sofie Von Otter and the Brodsky Quartet.

The opera will be performed at Copenhagen’s new opera house on Saturday and Sunday. Next season, it will be on the opera house’s repertoire with other performers.

Contacted nearly three years ago by the Danish Royal Theater ahead of the 2005 bicentennial of Andersen’s birth, Costello wrote “the songs (which) will tell a story that I have imagined existing between the lines of Andersen’s biography and some of his most famous tales,” he told reporters.

“I didn’t want it to sound like a pastiche of Andersen,” Costello said. The opera eventually will go on an international tour and will be released on compact disc and DVD.
Four musicians will accompany Costello and Stille at the opera’s main stage, which seats up to 1,700 people.

By picking Costello, “we wanted to show that we don’t want boxes at the opera. We thought the meeting between the two worlds would be interesting,” the opera’s artistic director, Kasper Holten, said.

This year, Danes mark the bicentennial of Andersen’s birth, who is renowned for his children’s stories, including the classics The Little Match Girl, The Ugly Duckling and The Red Shoes. Andersen died in 1875.

It is believed that Andersen wrote his tale The Nightingale with Lind – who lived from 1820-1887 – in mind.

Last Febuary Elvis commented -

"Of course the minute opera is mentioned it's like a big, fat woman with a Viking helmet. Everyone sees that image and thinks that it has to sound like Puccini.

"What I am actually doing is telling a story about Andersen. I didn't want to set one of the tales because that has been done.

"I'm right in the process of writing it - it's about Andersen who was this weird misfit kind of guy who came from a very poor background and rose to prominence because he basically invented children's stories. Andersen was a very conflicted person in his own sexuality. He kept falling in love with the wrong people.

"But it is not going to be written for an orchestra and I'm singing two of the roles in the initial production so it won't be like formal opera."

Elvis , Diana in Toronto, Mon Aug . 15

Jazz diva Diana Krall and her husband, rocker Elvis Costello, watched raptly as Oscar Peterson performed at his birthday party yesterday.

Costello had fashioned new lyrics to When Summer Comes, a waltz the seven-time Grammy winner wrote a couple of years ago.

Before she played, Krall explained how a performance she saw as a young woman by Peterson, accompanying Ella Fitzgerald, transformed her future.

"Life was never the same from that day on," said Krall who immediately went out and bought the Night Train LP, to which she still listens. "You are always with me and my band," she said.

Later, a nonplused Krall explained her nerves to reporters: "I'm at a complete loss. This is a really big deal for me. He's my hero."

Costello's lyrics to When Summer Comes speak of the losses of winter but also of the new blooms that spring carries, "in every shade of hope."

He told The News that the remarks Peterson made about the deaths of so many jazz giants in a telephone conversation they had prompted the moody piece.

"That guided me really," said the singer and songwriter.

Here are the lyrics as published in Toronto Star:

WHEN SUMMER COMES

(music by Oscar Peterson
new lyrics by Elvis Costello
played and sung by Diana Krall)

The land was white
While the winter moon was absent from the night
And the blackness only pierced by far off stars
But as every day still succeeds the darkest moments we have known
When seasons turn
Springtime colours will return
And as the first pale flowers of the lengthening hours
Seem to brighten the twilight and that melancholy cloak
Then a fresh perfume just seems to burst from each bloom
Until the green shoots through each day
As it arrives in every shade of hope
When summer comes
There will be a dream of peace
And a breath that I've held so long that I can barely release
Then perhaps I may even find a room somewhere
Just a place I can still speak to you

I thought I heard a black bell toll
Up in the highest dome
Admit you're wrong
Just bring the boys back home

Letterman & Regis Report

EC & The I's played Monkey To Man on both Letterman and Regis & Kelly. There was no couch time on Letterman, but Reg both chatted up Elvis and let him play the show out with 'PLU'.

Steve Nieve was wearing a 'John Kerry' button on both shows. Funny that it takes a Brit who lives in France to be the first talk show guest I've seen to have the nerve to wear their opinion on their chest.

Late Delivery

From the Memphis Commercial Appeal: Elvis Costello and the Imposters perform with special guest Emmylou Harris in two sold-out shows 8:30 and 11 p.m. tonight at the Hi-Tone, 1913 Poplar.

A limited number of tickets at $25 will be released before each show, however, according to club owner David Green. "It could be 5 or 70," he says, citing the need to first accommodate Costello's film crew before deciding how many additional people to let in. Around 425 total tickets have been sold, not including some 50 comps per show. Green hopes to be able to squeeze in 300 folks at each show.

Originally scheduled to start at 10:30 (as stated in Memphis Playbook) the late show has been pushed back to handle the expected walk-ups, ticket checks and crowd transfer between shows. Call 278-8663 for more info.Costello's only other scheduled U.S. appearance will be Sunday

EC at Joe's Pub

Note from a reader:

Saw the anti-war Jazz Passenger’s show last night at Joe’s Pub in NYC. Having recently seen Costello at Lincoln Center, I was thrilled to witness him in a place that holds maybe 200 people. I noticed Costello at the bar paying for drinks, and as luck would have it, he and Diana sat at the table next to ours.

Roy Nathanson is an absolute blast. I think I could watch him play sax all night, and the two numbers they did with Costello just brought the house down.

Elvis in OZ

Posted by Paul on the EC ListServe:

"Just wanted to let you know that this weekend magic happened at the Imperial Theatre on Broadway during the Saturday evening performance of "The Boy from Oz" while I was there -- Elvis Costello was in the audience and during the opening number of Act 2, Hugh Jackman singled him out and had him come up on stage and at the audience's encouragement, Elvis performed a number while Hugh sashayed (ala Peter Allen) all over the stage. It was sheer magic and entire show stopped cold for about 30 minutes. Since I was sitting in one of the VIP boxes to the left of the stage you could see the other actors standing in the wings just lapping up everything going on onstage. After this whole bit it was virtually impossible to keep going on with the show -- Hugh was freaking-out and the rest of the show went along like gangbusters."

More info:

"According to an entry on a forum on The Boy From Oz site - www.the boyfromoz.com - Elvis attended the show with his mother ` her first time out in 18 years'. The account notes:

'It was AWESOME. Elvis was jamming on the guitar, Hugh dancing like crazy all over the stage and doing the i'm not worthy bow , and then had a polaroid taken with Elvis while he was still playing. Everyone in the audience was standing and cheering , it was great !!' The account tells of more Costello references through the rest of the show.

Elvis invades Oxford

Elvis and his posse took over Oxford, Mississippi for their two shows there this past weekend. The many out-of-town fans who travelled to see them tell of various Imposters cycling around, eating breakfast and generally being a notable presence in the tiny town. The show were as advertised on the tickets as rehearsals for recordings in local studios. Each evening Elvis and the Imposters did about 70 minutes of music (mostly new songs), took a break, and then did the same songs again.

Elvis Costello named honorary Oxford citizen

The Daily Mississippian reports:

Excerpt - The "angriest man in rock'n'roll" is now a citizen of Oxford.

Elvis Costello, who surprised more than 400 people in attendance of Thacker Mountain Radio by making a guest appearance, was granted honorary citizenship by Oxford Mayor Richard Howorth. Costello is in Oxford recording a new album at Sweet Tea Studios and performing two sold-out shows this weekend at Proud Larry's.

"Whereas, the City of Oxford at times embraces artists (or at least tolerates them), and Elvis Costello once proclaimed his ultimate vocation in life was to be an 'irritant,'" the proclamation read in part. Costello was also given a key to the city.

After announcing Costello's honorary citizenship, he played "Scarlet Tide," which was nominated for an Academy Award. The song, which appeared on the "Cold Mountain" soundtrack, lost to "Into the West" from the "Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King."

Costello also played a closing song, "The Delivery Man." Costello said the song is from a series of story songs he has been working on for about five years.
Costello said the song stories followed the dreams of several women in a small town.

The radio show can be heard again on Sunday April 4th at 5PM ( CST ).

SONGS IN BOCHUM II
ELVIS COSTELLO, BILL FRISELL & FRIENDS
Ron Miles trumpet, Jenny Scheinman violin, Viktor Krauss bass, Matt Chamberlain drums - Jahrhunderthalle, Bochum - May 21st and 22nd

After enjoying huge success last year, American guitarist Bill Frisell continues his fascinating quest for timeless, sometimes even ”lost” songs. For the first project of 2004, he has invited a songwriter who, in the course of the 28 years of his career, has already become a legend who does not need any introduction: British songwriter Elvis Costello, a chameleon of song, breaking all stylistic boundaries and conventions in his songs, yet retaining his own distinctive voice. Costello and Frisell have been collaborating on several projects – at Century of Song, they will surprise their fans with an entirely new production.

Elvis Costello to Perform at Oscars

NEW YORK - Elvis Costello isn't too hip to perform at the Oscars.

Costello is nominated for his song "Scarlet Tide," from the film "Cold
Mountain." He will play while Alison Krauss and the Sacred Harp Singers
perform.

Costello's dizzying 25-year career has included rock and country, soul
and pop, punk and classical and jazz. He's responsible for songs like
"Alison" and "Red Shoes."

"I'm delighted to be there and delighted to be a part of it," he told
AP Radio recently. "Some part of you hopes a song endures and has a life
beyond the way it sits in the film, I know I'll sing it for the rest of
my days."

Every Little Thing He Does Is Tragic

Elvis did indeed show up at the Sting-A-Thon.

"The performance highlights included Elvis Costello, who brought a commanding sense to "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic." Even a slight fumbling of the lyrics couldn't dampen his ability to convey the romantic wonder of the song."

Elvis goes all George Formby

Elvis reminded us of a British musical hall hero when he accompanied himself with an instrument long associated with George Formby , the ukulele. On the Craig Kilborn show he used it while singing The Scarlet Tide. Having taped that show he then used it while singing Sting`s Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic at the Musicares tribute show for Mr Gordon Sumner.

Now for Elvis` version of WITH MY LITTLE UKULELE IN MY HAND

Still Streaming

Live from the House of Blues in Los Angeles.

I'm in the middle of enjoying this show right now - great pro-shot video, clear sound, and hot performances from EC and the boys. After the cold NORTH winter, it's nice to hear the old Rock -n- Roll.

And in case Elvis (or even Kate) is listening, a free idea. The technology of these webcasts is good enough to start charging. A nice free (or sponsored) show is great - but I'd have happily paid $5 for the right to see this show online and then download nice clean pro MP3's right after. Or make the video free and just sell the MP3s. Every serious Elvis fan in the world is either recording this show to hard drive while they watch (I certainly am) or arranging to trade for the CD from someone who has done it. It'll be in the stores in the Village in 60 days. At this point, most of us are old farts with more money than time - take my $5 and spare me the hassle.

Elvis` launched into an inspired set` , NY , Jan. 27

Elvis joined Diana for a corporate gig this past Tuesday.

The New York Post reports -

TUESDAY, JAN. 27: Back in New York, drifts of snow were building outside the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, during the party marking the 20th anniversary of A&E, where Mariel Hemingway and Jerry O'Connell caught Diana Krall's jazzy act. Then Liza Minnelli bravely slid up to the hotel in a limo, took the elevator to 36 and belted out a song. After Minnelli and O'Connell ran off to beat the snow, Elvis Costello (Krall's husband), launched into an inspired set.

Elvis declines Dr Jack

Here`s an account of Elvis`brief appearance on the BBC TV comedy show Deadringers (which features look-a-likes of famous people).

In this sequence , ` Ozzy Osbourne` serves behind a counter in a London chemist (drugstore) - Ozzy (white coat over black clothes and lots of chains around neck including large crucifix) is drinking from a bottle of Jack Daniels while serving customers from behind the shop sales counter.

After dealing with an elderly Irish nun (who declines a slug of Dr Jack - " it`s very good if you take it in moderation " she explains) there`s a cut to Ozzy looking up the shop and we can see Elvis (black leather coat over black clothes) walking up with a shop assistant . Elvis is taking something (money?) out of his coat`s inside pocket and Ozzy spots him.

Ozzy : Elvis Costello! Rock `n roll! Good to see you, man...

Elvis (grinning all the time) : And you ( shakes Ozzy`s outstretched hand, gives money to assistant he walked up with , she bags small red box and flat blue item for him).

Ozzy: ....always been a big influence on me...

Elvis: Yes - I can tell!

Ozzy: Did I influence you?

Elvis: Absolutely - I think that (points at bottle of Dr Jack) influenced me more.

Ozzy: ...Yeah ....listen mate (holding out bottle to Elvis) .... take it...you have it ....

Elvis: No , no.....I`ve had my share.

Ozzy: You were always an influence on me ....I always tried to sing like you , y`know , that voice you`ve got , y`know ( unintelligible , presumably examples of singing) ....but I just sound pissed....

(Elvis given change and bag)

Elvis: That`s two of us ! (guessed dialogue - difficult to make out over laugh track) ..... yeah , good day ( Elvis turning to leave , holds left thumb up ) good luck .

Ozzy: Good luck , man - lets record something....my (bleeped) hero...

All through the sequence members of the public and shop assistants can be seen grinning in the backround.

Elvis guesting at Jazz show in L.A., Feb.6/7th?

Those wild `n crazy cats over on the Diana Krall Jazz Princess forum are speculating about whether she will guest at a tribute show for one of her mentors and early supporters , the late Ray Brown . It`s on at the Orange County Performing Arts Centre , California on Feb. 6th and 7th. Diana and Elvis will be in L.A. that week for the , ahem , Sting `thingy` and the Grammies. Of course , where Diana goes , so does Elvis.....

A Tribute to Ray Brown
Feb. 6, 2004 - Feb. 7, 2004 / Founders Hall $49.00 - $56.00

Show Dates & Times
Fri, Feb. 6, 2004 at 7:30pm
Fri, Feb. 6, 2004 at 9:30pm
Sat, Feb. 7, 2004 at 7:30pm
Sat, Feb. 7, 2004 at 9:30pm

Russell Malone and Monty Alexander worked with the late, great Ray Brown on his final recording sessions, which were released following his death last summer. Now, Malone and Alexander are joined by Benny Green, Christian McBride, John Clayton and Jeff Hamilton in a rousing celebration of the legendary bassist's life and work. Over the course of a career that spanned more than 50 years, Brown swung with the best of them, from Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker to Oscar Peterson and Ella Fitzgerald (to whom he was married). This all-star jam session promises a loving tribute to one of jazz's brightest luminaries.

Now , NO ONE TELL Gary Peacock.....

Elvis cameo in British TV comedy show ?

It appears , according to an exchange on a Costello fan forum , that Elvis may have had a brief appearance on Dead Ringers , a BBC comedy made up of sketches featuring look-a-likes of famous people. I`m not sure if it was Elvis himself or someone who looked like him. I suppose the only way to find out for sure is to tune in next Wednesday(Jan.7th) for the repeat.

Did anyone just see Elvis on Dead Ringers New Year Special. They were doing a scene in a chemist shop with an impressionist doing Ozzy Osborne. Unsuspecting members of the public came in and were on film then Elvis suddenly appeared. It didn't seem to be a celebrity appearance, it just seemed like he was coming in as an ordinary customer. Does anyone reckon that it was arranged or whether it was just a coincidence? Which ever it was, it was a nice surprise.

Vintage EC on Letterman Reruns on TRIO Tonight

Elvis will be on Letterman today at 1pm and tonight at 10pm est on Trio. It's a 1987 (?) Spike episode, where EC in his black 'Johnny Cash' cowboy coat sings Pads Paws & Claws and a bit of Leave My Kitten All Alone and then gets some quality time with Dave on the couch to commit the the 'God's Comic' story break about the waterbed and 'Cats' to tape. Nice performance and good to see the still-young and hungry EC pushing the product.

After The Fall

As reported earlier, EC didn't stay for the two shows he was advertised to play at in NYC a few weeks ago. Today he issued these remarks:

Elvis Costello & The Iridium Club
Mr. Costello would like to apologise to all of those who attended the Iridium club date in hope of seeing him perform with Mr. Lee Konitz and Mr. Bill Frisell on the night 25th of November, supposedly to mark Mr. Konitz’s 76th birthday.

Mr. Costello had visited Mr. Konitz’s apartment on the previous Thursday to discuss and rehearse material and had a similar meeting with Mr. Frisell. At the soundcheck it was clear that the drummer, Mr. Matt Wilson, had prepared for a performance of “Someone Took the Words Away” from “North” with great enthusiasm and diligence. The bassist, Mr. Gary Peacock, declined to take the stand.

Even if one were not to regard this action as unprofessional and somewhat disrespectful to Mr. Konitz, as the leader, there can be no doubt that it was not exactly in the spirit of the celebratory nature of the evening. Obviously, a great variety of talented musicians have had no problem performing Mr. Costello’s compositions. However, as Mr. Konitz’s birthday had in fact been six weeks earlier, perhaps Mr. Peacock’s rather narrow view of the musical possibilities could be forgiven.

Far from leaving “in a huff”, as reported in the New York Times (27/11/03), Mr. Costello was scrupulously courteous to Mr Peacock throughout the rehearsal debacle in an attempt to ameliorate the regrettable situation and personally removed his music stand from the stage so as not to obstruct the audience’s view of Mr. Peacock’s technique.

Mr Costello, Mr. Konitz and Mr. Frisell reluctantly agreed that that the arrangements sounded rather like a “three-legged donkey” without credible bass accompaniment and parted in good humour.

Later, there was a frank exchange of views between the Mr Costello and the club over the telephone and it was made quite clear that he would not be appearing. Every opportunity could have been taken to inform incoming patrons of Mr. Costello’s removal from the bill. You may draw your own conclusions about this establishment and their failure to do so.

Subsequently, a call was placed to Mr. Costello's representative in the U.K., offering to fire Mr. Peacock from the gig if Mr. Costello were prepared to return to the engagement. It is unclear how this would have helped the situation, either musically or ideologically. Naturally, no artist or organisation of integrity would countenance such despicable treatment of a fellow musician.

Once again, Elvis Costello would like to apologise to anyone who queued up in the cold and to those who feel they paid an entrance fee unnecessarily but the musicians who were willing to play together were unwilling to compromise the quality of the performance in these most unfortunate circumstances. Mr. Costello hopes that the disappointed patrons enjoyed the rest of the programme and sends Mr. Konitz his most respectful greetings for his birthday…whenever it may fall….

Ladies and Gentlemen...

...there's no reason to do this song here.

This week in 1977 EC & the A's put forth what still stands as the best 3 1/2 minutes of musical television history, when they replaced the AWOL Sex Pistols on SNL.

Readers are encouranged to share their memories of this event in the comments below.

Elvis `no show`at Jazz show

Elvis did not , after all , guest at the Lee Konitz birthday show in the Iridium Club , New York , last night (Nov.25th). Some comments from attendees:

" What a drag!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It seems he had a fight or argument with either the bass player or the drummer, and was a no show for both shows, Lee Konitz was good, but after a while you start to think where is Elvis? at 9:30 the first set was over and still no Elvis, then after many angry customers wanted to know what the deal was, We were finally told he wasn't going to be playing or showing up at all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They must have know before the show started, but didn't tell anyone until we all started asking, they were giving out papers printed out for a complimentary ticket, for those of us who wanted our money back."

"I was at the show. Your note above is quite accurate. However here are some more details. While waiting outside on line (I was about the 7th person from the front) at approximately 6:00 pm, Elvis' green BMW appeared on the street in front of Iridium. Elvis walked out of Iridium towards his awaiting car, but suddenly turned back and spoke to the two women at the front of the line. He was quite angry and said they were only going to let him perform for two songs. His driver then opened the rear car door, Elvis got in and off they went down Broadway. As it turns out, Lee Konitz only performed two songs."

New York Times preview of the show that never was:
"The jazz saxophonist Lee Konitz, above right, turned 76 on Oct. 13, but he is celebrating the event now with a six-day engagement at the Iridium club on Broadway that begins tonight. His guests will include Bill Frisell, Gary Peacock and Matt Wilson, and for tonight's show only, Elvis Costello is to present him with a birthday cake. ."

November Group Concert

Climbing Cold Mountain

If you think it's tough finding Osama bin Laden, you ought to take a shot at discovering anything specific about the soundtrack album to the impending Civil War-era movie, Cold Mountain. The album bears looking into because it's being produced by T Bone Burnett, whose ear for listenable period music gave us the megaselling O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack. In addition, several acoustic-oriented country artists from O Brother and its spinoff projects have been involved in the new album, among them Ralph Stanley, Alison Krauss, Tim O'Brien, fiddler Stuart Duncan and guitarist Norman Blake. Calls to the Nashville and New York offices of Columbia Records, which will release the album in league with Burnett's DMZ label, have yielded nothing. According to Amazon.com, the soundtrack will be out Dec. 9, but the site offers no info on specific tracks or artists. Then there's the equally mysterious Cold Mountain stage event set for Nov. 17 at New York's Lincoln Center. Some -- and possibly all -- of the artists participating in the album have been asked to leave that date open, presumably to perform.

Having no luck with the usual sources, Hot Talk tracked down Tim Eriksen, a singer who specializes in shape-note singing (an ancient form of musical
notation) and who has been working with Burnett on a separate album. He says that all the artists cited above are on the soundtrack, as well as himself, Dirk Powell, Jack White (of White Stripes) and banjoist Riley Saugus. Elvis Costello and Sting, he adds, have written songs for the album. The Lincoln Center show, Eriksson thinks, will be filmed for either PBS or A&E. It will consist of musical performances by the soundtrack artists and readings by Cold Mountain's author, Charles Frazier, and the film's principal actors, Nicole Kidman and Jude Law. The O Brother phenomenon was greatly aided by the documentary Down From the Mountain, which was shot at Nashville's Ryan Auditorium well before the movie that inspired it was released. Perhaps there's similar thinking here.

Costello on Letterman Tonight

A reminder that the recent 'North' promo appearance repeats tonight on CBS.

Elvis in new Sinatra Show

frank1.jpg

Elvis appears in videotaped interviews in the new Radio City Music Hall show featuring the music of Frank Sinatra. From Guardian UK.

Excerpt: "Sinatra: His Voice is something of a milestone in live entertainment, a weirdly compelling collision of TV documentary and deranged Las Vegas floorshow. The rumours that a 3D Sinatra would stride the stage were, alas, exaggerated. The singer appeared in 2D, projected on gigantic movie screens and along the sleek curves of the theatre's proscenium arch, belting out standards in perfect time with a live 40-piece orchestra. These performances were intercut with videotaped testimonials from the likes of Elvis Costello, P Diddy, and a terrifying, 40ft-tall tangle of facial hair reputed to be Luciano Pavarotti. "

Live By Request - Tonight

"Live by Request" (9 p.m., A&E): Elvis Costello takes suggestions and plays for the next two hours. (Repeated at 1 a.m. and then for the next week or so)

From TV Guide: " Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Elvis Costello has made an influential career out of doing what he wanted to do. Tonight he'll let his fans tell him what to do in a concert of requests from New York City. In 1977, Costello arrived with his prototypical New Wave band, the Attractions, to put a spark into a rock scene that was becoming stagnant and overproduced. In the years since, he's dabbled in country and standards, and collaborated with Sir Paul McCartney, Burt Bacharach, Anne Sofie von Otter and the Brodsky Quartet. What he does here, though, is your call."

From the LBR Web Site: "Live concert by the British singer and songwriter called "the most talented pop tunesmith of his generation" by The New York Times. Although he looks like a nerd, Costello's roots are in the explosive punk era and his music often includes themes of political and social protest. Viewers can phone in or e-mail their song requests to Costello as he performs at John Jay College in New York City."

More on London BBC Show

Report from someone who was there:

"What an evening with the Radio 2 luvvies! Café de Paris is a swanky little niteclub, on Coventry Street (nowhere near Covent Garden as the Radio 2 website would have it). The guest list ran to several pages, far outnumbering the 50 lucky competition winners and their guests.

Missed out on the first round of champagne being offered, so we raced to one of the few unreserved tables on the ground floor. We were swiftly joined by Janice Long and friends who kindly included us in their conversation for the evening. Janice was star spotting for her mum; Phil Jupitus, Mark Lamarr, Jeremy Vine, Richard Allinson, (all Radio 2), Sue McGregor (Radio 4), Alan Yentob ("he knows loads about art") and many more BBC Radio managers and tecchies. David Puttnam (Film producer) and Steve Levine (Record producer) were also present. There were also a couple of minor acting celebs; including one lady who Janice wasn't sure if she was, "a nurse in 'Casualty' or the psycho from 'Hollyoaks'" ...

Free canapes, champagne and beer were server up until showtime and in the interval.

EC's set started at around 7:30pm and went on until the interval at 8:45pm. After the interval the show ran from 9:00pm to ~10:15pm. Husky voiced Mariella Frostrup acted as compere and interviewer and popped up frequently between songs. She seemed to have done her homework and got on well with a very talkative EC.

For all songs, except those with the Brodskys and those marked, EC played his Gibson semi-acoustic (with the now rather tatty yellow "Elvis" label). Steve played piano except with the Brodskys (I think!) and for the final two encore numbers.

20. I'm In The Mood Again (EC solo on piano)

And that's it. "Fantastic" as Janice would say!

A free "promo" CD was handed out to punters as they left; Card sleeve, with the "North" cover on the front and a Radio 2 style rear cover including details of "Sold On Song" producers and the Café de Paris event. "This CD is one of a special edition of 500 produced to mark the launch of Radio 2's Sold On Song, celebrating great songs & great songwriters on air, on line & on the road". The CD itself looks like a CD-R with a simple "Elvis Costello 4 track promotional CD" printed in black lettering on the label side.

Tracklist;
1. Still
2. Fallen
3. Someone Took The Words Away
4. When It Sings

The whole evening was well worth the TV Licence payers money!

News from HMV

Just back from the HMV signing.Elvis played four songs with just him on the piano. One was a Johnny Cash song that I can't remember the name of. He played "Still" and "I'm in the mood again" from the new album and at the end he played "Still" again saying that he wanted to play it without all the camera lights flashing in his face. He signed copies of the new cd for everyone who wanted it signed. I asked Elvis about the lack of "Elvis" dvd's there is to buy and suggested a live one would be great. He said "We've got plans for that". All in all a nice way to spend an afternoon in London. Cheers.

Elvis Piano Jazz on NPR

COSTELLO'S "PIANO JAZZ" AIRS IN SEPTEMBER

Elvis Costello performs jazz standards and his own material with pianist Marian McPartland for an upcoming installment of her National Public Radio series, "Marian McPartland's Piano Jazz." The episode will begin airing on NPR stations across the country on September 30, 2003 , a week after the Deutsche Grammophon release of Costello's album 'North.' Visit www.pianojazz.org for local airtime information.

"I got the call to do it, and I was delighted to speak with Marian," Costello says. "We did it completely off the cuff during the day... it was really good fun."

Costello sings with McPartland's piano accompaniment on songs including the standards "At Last," "My Funny Valentine," "You Don't Know What Love Is," and his own "Almost Blue," among others. He plays guitar and sings on "Gloomy Sunday," made famous by Billie Holiday.

Costello's September 23, Deutsche Grammophon release, 'North,' presents eleven new compositions written at the piano by Costello between Autumn 2002 and New Year's Day 2003.

The album, which features Steve Nieve on piano, Peter Erskine on drums and Mike Formanek on double bass, displays a tender and intimate vocal side never before showcased on record as the eleven ballads are sung predominately in his baritone register.

Costello NYC Town Hall

Tickets On Sale TODAY 1pm EST - TicketBastard
Sept 22 - Sept 24

Update: As usual, fuck these guys. At 1:01 tickets were 'on sale' but 'not available'. At 1:03 they managed Balcony 'F' and Loge 6. I could stand the rediculous fees if at least there was some chance of getting good tickets. I wouldn't even mind if they admitted that 50% of the seats went directly to brokers or scalpers - fine - I think that's free enterprise. But either admit that it isn't first-come-best-served or sell some good tickets to those who show up the minute they go on sale. After 5 minutes of re-trying and re-trying, both online and on the phone, I gave up. As usually, I'll wind up in the first 3 rows, via some scalper or broker. Or for $5 the day of the show out on the streets. Once again, a total lack of competition leads to horrible service. Email your congressman. Fuck Ticketmaster and more importantly those who run it.

BTW: The fine folks at TicketsNow will undoubtedly have top 5 row tickets very soon. Link on the sidebar at right listed as 'Buy Premium Tickets'. If you don't mind paying-up, this is an excellent place to get the BEST seats. (Plus your purchase supports this site...)

More on the Cole Porter Film

From The LA Times: "The scene is a masked ball in 1920s Venice and on stage, under a drizzle of streamers, Elvis Costello is leading a five-piece band through a boisterous version of Cole Porter's "Let's Misbehave." The music's swinging, everyone's dancing, and the bosoms — both men's and women's — are pleasurably heaving.

Costello's voice slides through the lyrics like a trombone. He bends his body backward — fingers snapping, shiny shoes tapping — and the band kicks the dancers into an orgy of exuberance, like King Louie and his apes boogieing with Baloo in "The Jungle Book."

Canadians Love Attention

Welcome to the new Elvis Costello: Music that's lower, slower

EXCERPTS: "One of his albums may be King of America, but Elvis Costello is now making plans to marry the Canadian queen of jazz. The 47-year-old Liverpudlian even hints at moving north, and based on Wednesday's stellar performance at the Jubilee, his citizenship should be expedited. "

But back to the main attraction. Costello, armed mainly with an acoustic guitar and a rich voice mixed with tenderness, regret and punkish brattiness, delivered a phenomenal set worthy of his Rock and Roll Hall of Fame-member status. Accompanied by Steve Nieve on piano, organ and melodica, Costello reinvented his entire catalogue -- from 1977's Alison to 2002's 45 -- into sparse guitar numbers with flourishes of classical piano stylings. Highlights included Watching The Detectives, a film-noirish romp with Nieve's cat-like piano tinklings; and God's Comic, which included a spoken-word interlude about the Almighty Being and her love of The Dixie Chicks and ended with Costello leading the crowd in a chorus of "I'm dead" and "I was scared."

"Come to think of it, Krall's presence was felt in every one of Costello's songs, old and new, particularly those on North, due Sept. 23. Not only has he adopted her lower register and slower tempos, songs such as You Left Me In The Dark and Fallen seemed to touch upon the end of his marriage to Caitlin O'Riordan and subsequent engagement. I may be reading too much into his lyrics ,but there's no denying the meaning behind the title track. North is a whimsical number about "the perfection of" Canada's treasures -- moose, ice, snow, blond jazz singers."

"I'm heading north," he sang during his second encore, to the delighted cheers of the crowd.

Upcoming 'Piano Jazz' appearance

From Baldwin Pianos

"Marian McPartland: One of Baldwin’s most prestigious artists, Ms. McPartland was in NYC this week ( May `03) taping several segments for upcoming air dates for her NPR “Piano Jazz” series, including a guest appearance by Elvis Costello."

Upcoming BBC Appearance

Elvis Costello is to appear in a 'concert of words and music', on September 15th in London, it was announced this evening (well, more like mentioned in passing really).

BBC Radio 2 Dj, and one time rock journalist, Stuart MaConie was in converstaion with Chris Difford when he happened to mention the up coming event. Apparently the gig will be broadcast (didn't say when) as part of the BBC's 'sold on song' season, and in support of the new album 'North', which Mr Difford referred to as 'stunning'.

Lupo's Report

"If you are an Elvis fan, Lupos was one of those nights you won't forget. The first set was a 90 minute version of what he's been playing on tour recently -- a good mix of the mellow and hard rocking stuff, with most of the latter being the better known and more widely played stuff (including Oliver's Army which he rarely plays any more)

The second show was unbelievable, two+ hours with most of the show being solid, straight ahead hard rocking/punk rock. Anyone thinking Costello has lost something or mellowed had to see this show -- much more hard rocking than any of his previous concerts with little repeat from the first set. Included Accidents, Watching the Detectives, Alison which weren't played the first set and a bunch of lesser known hard rocking songs, plus a great performance of I want you.

Oh yeah I forgot. Dancing girls onstage during the second set main set closer pump it up. Funniest thing when one tried to rub Elvis' head while he was playing, he was like a married man in a strip club running away from a lap dance.

3 1/2 hours of Elvis in a club that only holds several hundred people I believe that provided a combination of the most variety and most energy you will ever see from him in an evening."
