Vintage EC on Letterman Reruns on TRIO Tonight

Elvis will be on Letterman today at 1pm and tonight at 10pm est on Trio. It's a 1987 (?) Spike episode, where EC in his black 'Johnny Cash' cowboy coat sings Pads Paws & Claws and a bit of Leave My Kitten All Alone and then gets some quality time with Dave on the couch to commit the the 'God's Comic' story break about the waterbed and 'Cats' to tape. Nice performance and good to see the still-young and hungry EC pushing the product.

Memories of Elvis in `03

Elvis has been remembered in a few year end write ups. Columnists have been highlighting shows in Las Vegas , New York , Annandale and Glasgow. Sadly , only in Pittsburgh does North feature in an `albums of the year` listing.

Las Vegas
"Elvis Costello at The Joint, July 18: Elvis is King for a night, blazing through a series of enduring classics."

Annandale
"Nearly as big as Bowie was an evening in April at Bard College in Annandale that featured Elvis Costello and the Charles Mingus Orchestra. Costello seemed more at home singing jazz than he ever did performing rock when he and the Mingus Orchestra gave a concert that helped celebrate the opening of the Richard B. Fisher Center for the Performing Arts, a colossal new theater with an architectural style that is as interesting and dynamic as the artists who perform inside of the venue."

Glasgow
"This year fate smiled on me and I was able to buy seats in the fourth row, where I spent a few blissed-out hours watching a jet-lagged Costello and Steve Nieve, just back from Japan, play their hearts out. Their four encores ultimately lasted longer than the initial, wonderful set."

Elvis``day-after-Christmas` song

Elvis`only Christmas song , of sorts , is about the day after Christmas , Dec. 26th. That day is generally known as St Stephens Day in Ireland (deriving from when religious matters defined aspects of Irish life ) . Elvis wrote and recorded the song for a Chieftains album , The Bells of Dublin , in 1991. It , perhaps , received a more general audience when it was included as an extra with the 2002 Rhino re-issue of Mighty Like A Rose.

The lyric is a perfect portrayal of family life in the aftermath of Christmas. After the joy of the day , tensions reappear. Remembering , perhaps , extended family gatherings in his Anglo-Irish Liverpool/London childhood he includes references that are not strictly true to an Irish childhood . `That drink made from girders` -Irn Bru - still is not widely available in Ireland. `Tia Marias` would more likely be replaced by Jameson or Paddys.

Whatever - it is still a very funny song. My strongest memory of the song dates from 1995 . That summer I saw him perform it at the Cambridge Folk Festival. Performing solo he introduced it as a `cooling song`, to help the audience deal with suffocating heat at a partly covered out door show.

St. Stephen's Day Murders (Costello/Moloney)
========================

I knew of two sisters whose name it was Christmas
And one was named Dawn, of course the other one was
named Eve
I wonder if they grew up hating the season
The good will that lasts till the Feast of St. Stephen

For that is the time to eat, drink and be merry
Till the beer is all spilled and the whiskey has
flowed
And the whole family tree you neglected to bury
Are feeding their faces until they explode

Chorus:
There'll be laughter and tears over Tia Marias
Mixed up with that drink made from girders
Cause it's all we`ve got left as they draw their
last breath
Ah, it's nice for the kids as you finally get rid of
them
In the St. Stephen's Day Murders

Uncle is gargling a heart-breaking air
While the baby in his arms pulls all that remains of
his hair
And we're not drunk enough to dare criticise
The great kipper tie he's about to baptise

With his gin flavoured whispers and kisses of sherry
His best crimble shirt's slung out over the shop
But the lights from the Christmas tree blew up the
telly
His face closes in like an old cold pork chop

And the carcass of the the beast left over from the
feast
May still be found haunting the kitchen
And there's life in it yet, we may live to regret
When the ones that we poisoned stop twitchin`

-chorus-

Irn Bru
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

Irn Bru is the most popular caffeinated soft drink in
Scotland. It is available throughout Britain, Russia
and Canada. Its advertising slogan used to be "Made in
Scotland from Girders", although the closest one can
come to substantiating this claim is the 0.02% ferric
citrate listed in the ingredients (although this could
also be seen as a pun on the name of the manufacturer:
Barr). In Scotland, it is even more popular than
Coca-Cola.

The drink was first produced in 1901 under the name
Iron Brew. Other soft drink manufacturers in Scotland,
such as Hays or Sangs, produce their own versions of
Iron Brew and keep the original spelling, but only
Barr, the major vendor, changed to the phonetic
spelling in 1946 ostensibly to circumvent government
regulations on product naming.

When half-flat, cold, and combined with the previous
night's haggis dinner, it is widely reputed to be an
excellent cure for hangovers.

Rather surprisingly, it also makes an excellent mixer
with vodka, which explains why it sells more in Russia
than Scotland (although this information may be out of
date).

When McDonald's restaurants first opened for business
in Glasgow they did not serve Irn Bru. This was an
insult to the Scots who, as a result, picketed many
restaurants until the McDonald's Corporation relented.

The manufacturer is A.G. Barr, plc, United Kingdom

Irish Examiner review of North

A little late but a second print review of North has appeared in an Irish newspaper. Riddled with factual errors it still makes some interesting points; I hadn`t seen the Oscar Wilde `echo` before .

`In the past ,when Elvis documented the break-up of his previous marriage (Imperial Bedroom , Blood And Chocolate and King Of America) there was an explosion of anger , guilt and revenge.

North , however , doesn`t have a hint of bitterness. In Fallen , Costello tracks his previous self when he sings 'I never did what I was told/ I trampled through the amber and the burnished gold/ But now I see how cruel young can be '.

With echoes of Oscar Wide`s story The Happy Prince in that last couplet what the lack of bile allows Costello to do is move on to an almost embarrassing openness about his new found love. Still and Let Me Tell You About Her are probably the simplest love songs Elvis has ever written. Costello has said he wanted to make a thing of beauty with North. `

The Irish Examiner , Dec. 19 `03 .

Love lost and love regained.

Throughout his career Elvis Costello has
always strayed from rock and roll and wandered off
into other genres.

There was his homage to Motown and stax very
early on on his fourth album Get happy. For Almost
Blue, Elvis went to Nashville. Most recently , of
course, there was his collaboration with Burt
Bacharach on the sublime Painted From Memory.

Add in The Juliet Letters and King Of America
which featured various Pogues , and Spike which
contained lots of jazzy type stuff and a pattern
begins to emerge of constant diversification.

In spite of always being a devoted
musicologist , nevertheless , there are those who just
wish that Elvis would stay within the narrow but
brilliant and claustrophobic sounds he makes with The
Attractions.

Which brings us to Costello`s latest
long-playing release , North. Released on the
predominantly jazz label Deutsch Grammaphon and
categorized within that genre it`s not like Elvis has
gone all John Coltrane or Charlie Parker.

North is a close relation to Painted From
Memory , more Tony Bennett than Sun Ra . Costello
wrote the songs for North pretty quickly while on the
road touring last September 2002. The most noteworthy
background to their genesis in terms of Costello`s
personal life is that they emerge from the collapse of
his 16-year-long marriage to Cait O`Riordan and his
subsequent getting together with Grammy-award winning
jazz chanteuse Diana Krall.

Those used to Elvis`s ironic and cynical word
play and the dense layers of meaning in his songs will
be most shocked by the apparent simplicity and
straight forwardness of the tunes on North. In one
sense , North is like a cycle of love songs that run
from the end of one relationship to the beginning of
another. Most of them feature Elvis on piano in fairly
stripped down arrangements in keeping with the clarity
of the emotions depicted in the tunes.

Hence , the opening track , You Left Me In The
Dark , a sombre Randy Newman-esque number ( musically
speaking), traces the the last loving thing said
between a couple. It`s like a marker for the entire
album.

In the past ,when Elvis documented the break-up
of his previous marriage ( Imperial Bedroom , Blood
And Chocolate and King Of America) there was an
explosion of anger , guilt and revenge.

North , however , doesn`t have a hint of
bitterness. In Fallen , Costello tracks his previous
self when he sings 'I never did what I was told/ I
trampled through the amber and the burnished gold/ But
now I see how cruel young can be '.

With echoes of Oscar Wide`s story The Happy
Prince in that last couplet what the lack of bile
allows Costello to do is move on to an almost
embarrassing openness about his new found love. Still
and Let Me Tell You About Her are probably the
simplest love songs Elvis has ever written. Costello
has said he wanted to make a thing of beauty with
North.

Musically unremarkable , yet sublime in places ,
its openness and integrity is admirable but Costello`s
desire to purge himself of his own scepticism reduces
North too often to an over-simplification of the
complex issues of love lost and love found. All the
same , taken as a series of surface snapshots there
are some extraordinarily touching moments.

Vancouver Pre-Sale

The Concert on March 7 Vancouver will go on sale 12/18/03 at noon est. Do these people really need to hold everyone's cash for nearly 3 months? I imagine the promoter has a revenue line for interest on $200,000 for 80 days....

Every Burp You Make

Elvis Costello "Singles, Vols. 1-3" (MSI)

Elvis Costello's catalog has been re-released on CD not once, but twice, and all in double-disc packages that, collectively, dredge up every burp and blue joke he ever committed to tape. This exhaustive three-volume singles collection may sound redundant, but it gets to the essence of Costello's genius more directly than any other anthology. The first half of Costello's career dovetailed with the last great 7-inch vinyl single era, and his signature brand of excitable pop was perfectly suited to the format.

These three collections contain every single he recorded, from his 1977 Stiff debut, "Less Than Zero," to 1987's "A Town Called Big Nothing," which he wrote for Alex Cox's film "Straight to Hell." The singles are re-created as separate CDs in smaller reproductions of the original cover art, and quite a few contain bonus tracks. The collection also contains liner notes that discuss every release in detail. Each volume contains 11 or 12 discs and will set you back 6,000, so you might want to consider which Elvis Era ('77-'79, '80-'83, '84-'87) the person you're buying it for likes best. Hint: You can't go wrong with Vol. 1. (P.B.)

Cold Mountain on A&E

There is going to be a show on A & E Dec 17 at 11 pm EST, about the music of "Cold Mountain". It repeats at 3 am, and then again on Sunday at 10:30 am.

IN other TV news, Live By Request is being re-run on Biography Channelon New Years Eve, at 8 am and 2 pm. And Vh-1 is re-showing the Hall of Fame ceremony on Dec 24 at 6 am.

Bruce Thomas is back!

Former Attraction Bruce Thomas has just published On The Road...Again , a memoir of his activities in the 1990s. This includes his time back with Elvis and co. from 1993 to 1996. Little really is told about Elvis but we learn a lot about some pretty crazy things Bruce got up to. Contrary man that he is he finishes the book with a fake review of it that concludes

` This is the story of a man suffering from `the Diana syndrome` - someone with too much time on his hands and just enough money to indulge himself. While he conceitedly casts himself in the role of some kind of astral superhero connected to all life itself , he is actually becoming ever more introspective and isolated.
Those who know will take into account his divorce, and his other failed relationships , and worry that what is going on here is a little sadder and a lot more mundane than he , himself , realizes.

The author may well be `on the road again`. But is it a road that`s on anyone else`s map? `

Think well of me on the beach ...

Elvis picks his `Best Albums of 2003`

....... except they are from 1974 and 1962.

In the new Mojo ( Jan. `04) he tells Andrew Male -

' On The Beach [ Neil Young] is pretty great. I was so glad to get it again because I`d have it on vinyl and I don`t dig it out as much because I`m often travelling. The really sad thing is that the best thing I`ve heard all year was released in 1974! Actually , if it wasn`t that it was Think Well Of Me by Jack Teagarden which is much older. `

Re-Re-Re-Re-Issues Site

Cool new web site explains the details on possibilities of the current and future Rhino Reissues.

After The Fall

As reported earlier, EC didn't stay for the two shows he was advertised to play at in NYC a few weeks ago. Today he issued these remarks:

Elvis Costello & The Iridium Club
Mr. Costello would like to apologise to all of those who attended the Iridium club date in hope of seeing him perform with Mr. Lee Konitz and Mr. Bill Frisell on the night 25th of November, supposedly to mark Mr. Konitz’s 76th birthday.

Mr. Costello had visited Mr. Konitz’s apartment on the previous Thursday to discuss and rehearse material and had a similar meeting with Mr. Frisell. At the soundcheck it was clear that the drummer, Mr. Matt Wilson, had prepared for a performance of “Someone Took the Words Away” from “North” with great enthusiasm and diligence. The bassist, Mr. Gary Peacock, declined to take the stand.

Even if one were not to regard this action as unprofessional and somewhat disrespectful to Mr. Konitz, as the leader, there can be no doubt that it was not exactly in the spirit of the celebratory nature of the evening. Obviously, a great variety of talented musicians have had no problem performing Mr. Costello’s compositions. However, as Mr. Konitz’s birthday had in fact been six weeks earlier, perhaps Mr. Peacock’s rather narrow view of the musical possibilities could be forgiven.

Far from leaving “in a huff”, as reported in the New York Times (27/11/03), Mr. Costello was scrupulously courteous to Mr Peacock throughout the rehearsal debacle in an attempt to ameliorate the regrettable situation and personally removed his music stand from the stage so as not to obstruct the audience’s view of Mr. Peacock’s technique.

Mr Costello, Mr. Konitz and Mr. Frisell reluctantly agreed that that the arrangements sounded rather like a “three-legged donkey” without credible bass accompaniment and parted in good humour.

Later, there was a frank exchange of views between the Mr Costello and the club over the telephone and it was made quite clear that he would not be appearing. Every opportunity could have been taken to inform incoming patrons of Mr. Costello’s removal from the bill. You may draw your own conclusions about this establishment and their failure to do so.

Subsequently, a call was placed to Mr. Costello's representative in the U.K., offering to fire Mr. Peacock from the gig if Mr. Costello were prepared to return to the engagement. It is unclear how this would have helped the situation, either musically or ideologically. Naturally, no artist or organisation of integrity would countenance such despicable treatment of a fellow musician.

Once again, Elvis Costello would like to apologise to anyone who queued up in the cold and to those who feel they paid an entrance fee unnecessarily but the musicians who were willing to play together were unwilling to compromise the quality of the performance in these most unfortunate circumstances. Mr. Costello hopes that the disappointed patrons enjoyed the rest of the programme and sends Mr. Konitz his most respectful greetings for his birthday…whenever it may fall….

Ladies and Gentlemen...

...there's no reason to do this song here.

This week in 1977 EC & the A's put forth what still stands as the best 3 1/2 minutes of musical television history, when they replaced the AWOL Sex Pistols on SNL.

Readers are encouranged to share their memories of this event in the comments below.

And Next - Andrew Lloyd Weber!

And today it was announced that for his next tour, Elvis Costello will scrap his own material, and instead perform the Andrew Lloyd Weber 'music' of Cats, Starlight Express, and The Phantom of the Opera.

"Elton and Gordon, along with my pal Billy, have finally convinced me of the benefits of selling out, completely," said a bouyant Mr. Costello. "I spent over twenty-five years playing the 'integrity' card, and I end up with only the respect of music critics, thinking people, and a group known as 'trainspotters'. Meanwhile new albums by 2nd place finishers from TV talent shows outsell me by, like, 3 million copies. You can't retire on that kind of love. It only takes a few weekends at the Castle, nights at the Mansion, or wee-hours on the 'A' list to convince you that the derision of the elite is a small price to pay."

Rumoured future Costello projects including a ballet and an Ethiopian Tribal Music CD have been scrapped, and his people are now doing focus groups to decide if a Coolio/Eminem covers album or remakes based on the Ella Fitzgerald 'Songbooks' Series will hit the market next.

Then Sting...

Prominent recording artists Tony Bennett, Black Eyed Peas, Elvis Costello, Dido, Elton John, Diana Krall, k.d. lang, Dave Matthews, John Mayer and Rufus Wainwright are scheduled to perform in honor of GRAMMY(R)-winning superstar Sting at the 2004 MusiCares(R) Person Of The Year gala, it was announced today. Sting -- chosen for his accomplishments as a musician, humanitarian and environmental activist...

First Elton...

Krall and Costello marry in London . . .

"Nanaimo, B.C.'s jazz chanteuse Diana Krall tied the knot with her beau of one year, Elvis Costello, in a wedding held at Elton John's castle outside London on Saturday night. The approximately 150 guests, who included Paul McCartney and Canada's consul general to New York, Pamela Wallin, were sworn to secrecy.

Krall, 39, and Costello, 49, began dating last January after the Grammy Awards in New York. The two live in New York and on Vancouver Island. The marriage is the first for Krall. Costello's previous two marriages ended in divorce."

Springsteen Night 1 - PLU but no EC

A report on the first night of the Bruce Holiday Series. (Elvis is a potential guest at an upcoming show).

"Other surprises included Springsteen's hard-rocking "(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love and Understanding," written by Nick Lowe and popularized by Elvis Costello; and Van Zandt's earnest version of the Ramones' "Merry Christmas (I Don't Want To Fight Tonight)." Drawing from his own catalog, Springsteen pulled "None But the Brave" and From Small Things (Big Things One Day Come)" from the rarities disc of his recent anthology, "The Essential Bruce Springsteen"; and "Thundercrack," "Seaside Bar Song" and "The Wish" from "Tracks," his 1998 boxed set of previously unreleased material and B-sides."

The Two Kings

Solomon Burke was on 60-Minutes last night, with a brief Elvis Costello name-check. Good segment. Here's the written version.

"The music business may be cruel, but it's also irresistible. So last year, after a 30-year hiatus, he jumped at the chance to make a new album with songs written for him as a tribute by such giants as Bob Dylan, Van Morrison and Elvis Costello."

The Two Elvises

The Age Talks To James Burton

"Nor should we forget the Elvises - both of them. Burton led Presley's backing band from 1969 until his death in 1977, and says he was sitting at his desk at home in California one day when he picked the telephone and heard a voice say "James, this is Elvis Costello". "I nearly dropped the phone." He toured Australia with Costello in 1987 after playing on his album, King of America.

And the Elvis? "I was with him 'til he died," says Burton, who was in Australia in 1999 with the Elvis, The Concert virtual-reality show, featuring the King on giant video screens. He returns this week with Presley's Taking Care of Business (TCB) Band - Jerry Scheff (bass), Glenn D. Hardin (piano) and Ronnie Tutt (drums) - and Australian singer Mick Gerace, who starred in the show, Intimate and Rare/In the Spirit of Elvis."

Costello Takes 'North' On Tour

Elvis Costello has scheduled a brief winter tour that will kick off Feb. 19 in Clearwater, Fla., and end March 11 in San Francisco. The 13-date trek comes in support of his latest album, "North" (Deutsche Grammophon).

As was the case for a handful of appearances around the time of the release of the album of ballads, Costello will be accompanied by his longtime collaborator, Attractions/Imposters keyboardist Steve Nieve for the tour.

In addition, three dates -- Feb. 24 in Nashville, Feb. 26 in New York and Feb. 27 in Boston -- will see the duo joined by the Brodsky Quartet. The four-piece string ensemble first backed Costello on the 1993 album "The Juliet Letters," and also contributed to "North."

Released in October, "North" debuted at No. 1 on Billboard's Top Jazz Albums chart and held the post for five consecutive weeks. The set has sold 59,000 copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Uncut review of the Singles Volumes

Uncut ( Jan.`04) - home of one of the more savage reviews of North - redeem themselves somewhat with some kind words from Paul Lester about the Edsel Singles`Volumes.

Elvis Costello`s been discredited these days ,like that other `77-emerging nerd genius David Byrne guilty of releasing too much adequate fare for too long , but for sustained invention he`s up there with Bowie. His run of form lasted 10 years - the period covered by these sets.

The first box goes from 'Less Tan Zero' to 'I Can`t Stand Up For Falling Down', the second from `High Fidelity' to 'Pills And Soap' while the third ranges from 'Everyday I Write The Book' to 'A Town Called Nothing (Really Big Nothing)`. Within the 35 facsimile sleeves - works of art in themselves - lie all the original B-sides, plus no fewer than 20 tracks that have never before been released on disc - even on the expansive two-CD Deluxe Edition reissues of Costello`s albums. And they call Ryan Adams prolific. (4 Stars - `Very Good`)

About Those Two Florida Shows...

Big coverage of the fact that EC is playing two successive nights in Tampa.

Excerpts: "In an unprecedented bit of cross-bay concert scheduling, Elvis Costello will perform Feb. 19 at Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater, and then follow up the next night at the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center"

..."Ruth Eckerd Hall and the TBPAC have been talking about presenting the same artist in both venues for some time now," Bobby Rossi, director of entertainment at the Clearwater hall, said in a statement. "The act had to be very special, not only in their popularity but also in the content of their show and their ability to perform some different songs in Clearwater and Tampa. . . . Elvis Costello nails it in both of those areas."

"...Costello's last show in the area was just more than a year ago at the Clearwater hall, and it sold out almost immediately. Considered one of pop's best musician/songwriters, the native of Liverpool, England, burst onto the scene in 1977 with My Aim Is True. He has recorded in just about every genre from punk to classical, writing songs with Paul McCartney and recording a critically acclaimed album with Burt Bacharach. It's likely many fans will try to attend both shows, but if the experience of comedian Jerry Seinfeld holds, Costello could draw fairly distinct crowds." (Huh?)

In an unprecedented bit of cross-bay concert scheduling, Elvis Costello will perform Feb. 19 at Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater, and then follow up the next night at the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center.

Although the halls are usually fierce rivals to book the biggest acts, both sides said Wednesday that they hope the Costello booking will lead to future collaborations.

"Ruth Eckerd Hall and the TBPAC have been talking about presenting the same artist in both venues for some time now," Bobby Rossi, director of entertainment at the Clearwater hall, said in a statement. "The act had to be very special, not only in their popularity but also in the content of their show and their ability to perform some different songs in Clearwater and Tampa. . . . Elvis Costello nails it in both of those areas."

Michael Kilgore, vice president of marketing at TBPAC, said sharing the booking "opens it up to two different geographic areas. . . . If it's unprecedented, it's good to break precedent."

Costello's last show in the area was just more than a year ago at the Clearwater hall, and it sold out almost immediately. It's likely many fans will try to attend both shows, but if the experience of comedian Jerry Seinfeld holds, Costello could draw fairly distinct crowds.

Lex Poppens, director of marketing and communications at Ruth Eckerd, said the management for Seinfeld, who recently sold out four shows in Clearwater, asked for statistics on the audience to help decide if it would make sense also to perform in Tampa. The majority, 72 percent, came from Pinellas, 16 percent from Hillsborough, 9 percent from Pasco and the rest from other areas.

Depending on the act, TBPAC's audience figures generally mirror those, drawing far more heavily from Hillsborough, Kilgore said.

Tickets for Costello's Clearwater performance go on sale to members today at 9 a.m., and to the general public Dec. 12 at noon. The Tampa tickets are available at noon today to members, and to the general public Dec. 12 at noon. Seats at both shows are $42 to $77, plus service charges. Call TBPAC at 813 229-7827, or www.tbpac.org Ruth Eckerd at (727) 791-7400 or www.rutheckerdhall.net

Who's This Kid?

The network of Rock and Roll (Fox News) gives us another music scoop:

Costello, Bon Jovi Will Join the Boss
"I guess this means Bruce Springsteen really is the Boss of Bosses. I’m told that his Sunday night Christmas show at the Asbury Park Convention Center will now also feature Jon Bon Jovi, Richie Sambora, and a “rumored” Elvis Costello — that’s in addition to Southside Johnny, the Max Weinberg 7, Garland Jeffreys, Jesse Malin, and soul legend Sam Moore. These shows, by the way, are for charity."

Isley Meet Bacharach

You've probably heard that Burt is fooling around again. EC's name has appeared in many reviews, and here's another: "This collaboration revives Bacharach in a way the Elvis Costello pairing Painted by Memory could not. Where Costello's voice is a limited instrument, Isley is one of the most underrated of the '60s soul children—his velvety mid-range and tender falsetto have remained a staple of basement seductions and slow-jam radio for generations."

Elvis - "a comfortable old pair of shoes."

Wanda Jackson has really got fond of the new Elvis in her life.

`She has just released Heart Trouble, her first album in 15 years, revealing an influence so wide that the CD includes a duet with a different Elvis -- the one surnamed Costello.

Wendell (Wendell Goodman , Wanda`s husband) grouses, "I've got a new Elvis in my life."

But she smiles and tells him, "It's a good thing you've got such a good ego." `

`Elvis Costello insisted on meeting Wanda rather than dubbing in his voice for their duet, the old country standard Crying Time. Before recording the song, she vaguely recognized his name. Now she compares him to "a comfortable old pair of shoes." `

The Crimes of Paris

Tim Goodman , TV previewer of The San Francisco Chronicle is clearly a fan of Elvis. Previewing The Simple Life , a new Fox Tv series , he had this to say about the show`s star , Paris Hilton -

`As I watched "The Simple Life," I was reminded of some lyrics by Elvis Costello, from a song that cleverly took to task a pinup girl, using a popular cultural reference at the time of the album -- Madonna: "You're somebody's daughter, you know/ Or is that immaterial girl?"

OK, so the crimes of Paris (wink) are enough to make a father pray his daughter turns out, um, differently.`

Loveliness of Paris seems sadly vacuous

The Simple Life: 8:30 p.m. Tuesday on Fox (episode two airs at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday).

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There is strange good fortune at Fox, which has Paris Hilton, the celebutante and home-sex-movie practitioner, all lined up for television's first hotly anticipated midseason show. The hype couldn't be hotter. Paris involved in porn. And her partner in rich-girl excess, Nicole Richie, slipping into heroin rehab. In the TV business, unless we're talking about Dan Rather, this makes executives giddy. It's a promo orgasm.
"The Simple Life," premiering Tuesday, features these two young women being plucked from Beverly Hills -- where neither has ever had a job in her life -- and dropped into rural Arkansas to live with the dumbstruck Leding family on their farm. Yes, it's a real-life "Green Acres."

In all likelihood, it will be a smash hit.

Ah, but it wasn't always so simple. Back in July, at the TV critics press tour, as Fox was promoting "The Simple Life" almost as an afterthought to its fall programming, Fox really had to drum up interest among critics just to show up to the session about the show. Here, verbatim, is what I was told after responding in lukewarm fashion to the idea of watching Hilton prattle on about a series that wasn't scheduled until deep into the season:

"We're just hoping she's wearing underwear."

Feeling a duty to Chronicle readers, I went.

She was wearing underwear.

Two weeks ago, I got sent an e-mail link to a photo of Hilton getting out of her car. She is not, very clearly, wearing underwear. (And save yourself the effort: No, I'm not forwarding it to you.)

What happened in the press session for "The Simple Life" is now a tiny slice of network lore. After showing a short preview reel, which sent the assembled critics into raucous laughter -- and then witnessing the interview session, where the laughs increased and critics sat slack-jawed listening to the verbal stupidity of this duo -- Fox quickly and prudently changed gears and moved "The Simple Life" into Position A as a midseason replacement.

You might think this little introduction brings us nicely to the merits of the series -- which are many -- if you're impatient. But you'd be wrong.

It brings us instead to another anecdote, from a colleague who passed along that a male friend -- who recently had a daughter -- came up with this gem:

"He said his main job as a father now is to keep her off the pole."

That's a stripper pole, for those of you who are not apoplectically frightened fathers of young girls living in the modern world. After Tuesday, said fathers can amend their goal thus: "My main job as father is to keep her from becoming Paris Hilton."

Yes, she's that scary.

In fact, the biggest question for discerning viewers after "The Simple Life" premieres is not "What were the ratings?" or "Have you ever seen anyone dumber in your entire life?" No, it's either one or both of these: "Shouldn't you have access to great education if you're rich?" and "How is it possible that the Hilton family could raise not one, but two, smart-challenged girls?"

Yes, inexplicably, Nicky Hilton's Frisbee is also on the roof.

I suppose there will be much critical yammering about "The Simple Life," which is, in fact, almost too perfect to go wrong. It's stunning in that kind of modern way where people have no qualms about getting in front of a camera without a filter. And so here we are, who knows how many degrees of separation from Ava Gabor, and there's Paris vamping it up with her milelong legs and blond hair, pouting into the camera at every opportunity as if, well, as if she doesn't know any better.

Before we see her in Arkansas, we glimpse her in Beverly Hills, where she's famous for being famous and rich -- the little party girl who could, and would. Her parents, who, it should be assumed, indulged this as they must have indulged her proclivity to skip homework, are seen wishing her well. At a swanky party for 100 other white people. She flies off in a helicopter.

Next stop, Arkansas. Let the social-class exploration of the Fox Broadcasting network begin. And so it does, with hilarious, if predictable, results. Paris and Nicole are caviar out of water in Arkansas. They have no money, no credit cards, no cell phones. They have to survive for 30 days on the Leding family farm. The two Leding boys, Justin and Cayne -- and later all their male friends -- stare transfixed at all the beauty that Fifth Avenue makeup can muster.

"The Simple Life" is a one-note joke, but it's a good one. It has the benefit of being "Green Acres" but true. When the family talks about Wal-Mart, Paris has no clue it's a store. "Do they sell stuff for your walls?"

Forced to do chores for the first time ever, the duo go grocery shopping. "What does generic mean?" Paris asks.

The girls will get into all kinds of scary socioeconomic shockers as the series unfolds. They get a job on a dairy and muse about minimum wage. Their first task -- after arriving at 7 a.m., an hour late -- is to wake up the cows. "Who knew you could wake up a cow with a bell?" Paris asks.

Who, indeed.

Paris and Nicole botch that job and get fired. But they earn $42. "At least give us $50," Nicole says disgustedly.

Later it looks as if they will lose other jobs, annoy their host family, possibly seduce one of the sons, terrorize the town and give viewers exactly what they might expect, but with that little extra Paris something or other.

The beauty in all of this is that if you look at it just slightly from the side, you might surmise that she's kidding, playing up the dumb angle.

But that only makes you sleep better. In fact, she's not pretending at anything other than life itself.

As I watched "The Simple Life," I was reminded of some lyrics by Elvis Costello, from a song that cleverly took to task a pinup girl, using a popular cultural reference at the time of the album -- Madonna: "You're somebody's daughter, you know/ Or is that immaterial girl?"

OK, so the crimes of Paris (wink) are enough to make a father pray his daughter turns out, um, differently. My 3-year-old daughter, not privy to the Hilton fortune, attends the wonderful Hearts Leap School in Berkeley, and, like most wonderful schools, it needs cash.

So your friendly neighborhood TV critic will host a benefit bash on Thursday at the hippest movie house going, the Parkway Speakeasy Theater in Oakland. You may remember that the Parkway Speakeasy is home of the famous Baby Brigade, where nursing mothers can enjoy getting out of the house and actually seeing a movie and having a life.

Oh, and they serve beer and pizza there. And they just got some new couches.

Our "TV Hootenanny" will feature some "from the vault" screenings, a live "TV 101" Q&A session (where I'll be able to tell you the TV stories I can't print here, if you ask politely), a silent auction and a cheesy free raffle, where you'll probably get some worthless TV swag that you'll turn around and sell on EBay for real money.

There are two shows, 6:30 and 9:15 p.m. First show, $10. Late show, $8. The Parkway Speakeasy Theater (www.picturepubpizza.com) is at 1834 Park Blvd., about a quarter-mile west off the Park Boulevard exit on 580.

Come on out, have a beer and a slice, watch a little TV, ask a couple of questions and have some fun. Nursing moms and their babes are welcome, especially at the first show. Let's make sure the little girls (and boys) of Hearts Leap School learn that it's never OK to be on a reality TV show.

E-mail Tim Goodman at tgoodman@sfchronicle.com. He can be heard at 8:30 a.m. every Monday on the "KFOG Morning Show," 104.5 FM.
